COMPANY

AUDITIONS

At auditions, dancers will have the opportunity to specify which specific style(s) they are desiring to compete with. For some dancers this will be all styles, for some this may be just hip hop for example.

Dancers will participate in learning various across the floor exercises & choreography combos in each style to be performed for Activated staff at the end of the audition day.

This helps us to see where they are at with their technical foundation & skills, as well as see how they pick up choreography, how they perform it, and give us an idea of where to appropriately place them if they make the Company.

If any dancer does not make Company, they will be provided with exact reasons & notes so they know exactly what goals they are working towards this season for next year’s audition.

COMPANY MEMBERSHIP

Company Cast Lists will be emailed out, as well as posted on our socials on Monday, August 12th.

Our focus for company members is to build their technique to the highest level possible. This happens when ample time is dedicated to technical training, rather than spending the entire dance season utilizing class time to practice the same choreography week after week. If a dancer has a strong foundation in their technical training, a byproduct of that is they should be able to pick up & retain choreography quicker.

When a dancer makes a Company, they are then welcomed to choose which styles for each company that they would like to take. Dancers can take all styles, or just one or two. That is completely up to you.

The Company Membership tuition package is reserved for Company members who desire to take 5 or more classes per week during the season.

If a Company member wants to compete in Jazz or Lyrical, or they have a Solo, then

they are required to take Company Ballet.

Why prioritize ballet class when my dancer’s interest is with other dance styles like jazz and lyrical?

Studying ballet affords your dancer the opportunity to be technically stronger in those styles. Ballet training teaches the body to use muscles to achieve turn out, extensions, back flexibility, balance, posture, and stamina. It will help each dancer achieve things like extension & flexibility safely, teaching proper muscle placement and body placement. Sometimes, especially with the influence of social media, we want to get skills to keep up, so dancers are pushing their bodies fast and in ways that are not healthy. Pulling muscles and tearing ligaments is not the answer. As dancers we want as long of a career as possible, not one with hip replacements and knee replacements by age 30. That is why ballet is so important. It teaches you to push your body within its limits. It teaches patience and discipline. It is also honest, and true. There are no quick fixes, you have to work hard to master the technique and you can see the actual progress or lack thereof.

SPECIALIZED

DANCES

Since weekly Jazz & Lyrical classes are technique focused, competitive dances (which will be called “Specialized Dances”) will not be learned in those weekly classes during the season. Each company (Jr. Teen & Sr.) will have the option to participate in one full company specialized lyrical dance and one full company specialized jazz dance to take to competition. These dances will be learned in full in August/September on a few Fridays & Saturdays. This allows our teachers to focus on building their technique during class time throughout the season. We will have specialized dances come in one Saturday per month for a competition group rehearsal for cleaning/perfecting.

Tap & Hip Hop are the company classes where a dance will be learned during the weekly class time, due to the nature of these styles.

Your company member may be asked to do extra specialized dances (such as a small group or duo/trio, etc). You are not obligated to accept the offer & are free to decline if the financial commitment is unwanted (extra choreography fee, extra costume, extra competition fee).

SPECIALIZED DANCE PAYMENT

There will be a one time choreography fee per company specialized dance, per dancer, in order to pay our instructors accordingly for their time choreographing, teaching and editing music. Since specialized dances are learned in August, and Company members are not in weekly classes yet, you can think of these choreography fees as your “August tuition.”

A solo choreography fee is $300, a duet/trio is $200 per dancer, and a group dance is $100 per dancer.

As mentioned before, dances will be maintained (cleanliness of routine) during the season on one Saturday per month with their choreographer, at no extra cost to the dancer.

Choreography fees are due on the day of the first specialized dance rehearsal for each dance/solo.

August is Company rehearsals only.

Weekly studio classes begin September 2nd.

SOLOS

Company members who receive a solo for competition will be contacted by their choreographer to set up their August solo rehearsals.

Soloists will pay their $300 choreography fee in August on the day of their first solo rehearsal. This fee includes music editing, choreography, instruction and 3 hours of time in the studio to learn the choreography.

Weekdays at the studio from August 12 - August 30 are reserved for Soloists getting their 3 hours of time in the studio (broken up into 1 hour slots).

After a dancer’s solo choreography is learned, they are required to sign up for at least one private session per month ($50 per session) with any of our teachers. Soloists can sign up for more than one private per month if they’d like, but they are only required to sign up for one per month.

Private Session signups can be found in the Dance Studio Pro Parent Portal. This allows parents to look at the calendar, see all of the session time slots available, and choose what works best for them that month.

HOW TO BOOK PRIVATE SESSION

In the Parent Portal, you can book privates and appointments by going to More > Private Lessons & Appointments.

You will be presented with a list of available time slots that you can schedule.

When you click the Schedule button, you will have the option to select the date, time and who the private is for.

You are given the option to review the appointment before you finalize the session.

You will have to agree to the cancellation policy before you can complete the booking.

As soon as you book the appointment, a confirmation email will be sent to the Studio, the Parent’s email and the Teacher's email address, containing all details of the booked session.

A charge will also automatically be applied to your account for the session.

WORKSHOPS/INTENSIVES

Company members will be required to participate in a total of 3 workshops/intensives that come to the studio throughout the year. We will strive to offer at least one workshop/intensive per month, but do not guarantee that. This not only helps them grow as dancers, but it also shows commitment to the entire team and studio. Fees for these will vary.

Dancers will be committed to attend all required competitions for the season. If you feel

like this will conflict with other activities, please do accept the invitation of being a company member. It would not be fair to the team if we had to re-block a dance due to an absence.

REBLOCKING FEES

Should a dancer drop out of a dance within 30 days of a competition or an Activated Arts showcase/performance, a $125 reblocking fee per dance will be due in order to compensate staff properly for time spent reblocking the routine due to the dancers absence.

PRIVATE LESSON CANCELLATIONS

Any cancellation must be made 24 hours before the scheduled private lesson. Privates canceled or rescheduled with less than 24 hour notice will be charged the full price of the private. There is no charge for lessons canceled with more than 24 hour notice.

Private Sessions will be automatically billed & due 10 days after the day the Private Session is scheduled.

A $10 late fee will apply to private sessions not paid on that 10-day mark.

WITHDRAWAL & REFUNDS

One month's notice is required to discontinue any class. Please submit your withdrawal by email to JC.ActivatedArts@gmail.com. Registration fees are non-refundable.

ATTENDANCE

Our dance instructors take attendance for each class. Good attendance is very important to your dancer's success, as well as the progress of the class as a whole. Please make every effort to have your child at class each week. We understand, missing class is inevitable sometimes, but excessive absences do become a problem. If a dancer is struggling and the instructor or parent feels it necessary, a private lesson may be requested to help the dancer with any missed material. If excessive absences do occur, it is within the instructors right to remove that dancer from the performance piece for showcase/revue.

In the event that a dancer is sick, please keep them home to avoid spreading illness. Be sure to communicate with the studio to inform the teachers of their absence. Communication should be made through the proper studio communication lines, not a teacher’s personal cell phone.

In the event that a dancer is injured, it is expected that dancers still come and observe class.

DRESS CODE

All members of Activated Arts are expected to wear a leotard & tights to all classes, excluding Hip Hop. (Skirts or tight shorts are allowed over their leotard) This allows instructors to see body positioning to ensure safety and proper posture/technique. We pride ourselves on offering top of the line training from highly qualified educators who have a deep knowledge of dance. A leotard & tights is a part of the tradition of dance that we respect with a belief in maintaining a certain standard. Uniformity in dance wear also helps instructors to notice little mistakes (a hip too high, an elbow in the wrong place, a wrist dropped, etc) when their eye is not distracted by multiple different clothing distractions from different dancers.

Hair must be in a bun for all ballet classes. Hair should be neatly pulled back & out of the face for all other styles. No large jewelry may be worn in any class or performance. Please remove bracelets, watches, rings & necklaces before entering your classroom. Students will be asked to remove them and we are not responsible for lost items. Clear nail polish only on fingers and toes during all performances, photo shoots, and productions. We also require natural colored hair for all performances & competitions.
